Sirens Squeek out a Win in the Home Opener

Posted on October 24th, 2010

Naptown Roller Girls welcomed Maine Roller Derby‘s Port Authorities to The Pepsi Coliseum for the Season Five home opener on Oct. 23rd. The rabid Naptown fans were treated to a well played, evenly matched bout on the track. The Tornado Sirens took a quick but small 4 – 0 lead in the first two jams but by the third jam The Port Authorities were on the board 6 – 4. Naptown held the lead til nearly the end of the first half with the largest gap coming in at 28 – 8. Maine clawed their way out of the hole when Siren’s jammer, Blazin’ Ace, sat in the box. Barbara Ambush racked up a triple grand slam making it 51 – 36 for Maine and 6 minutes on the clock. It was Naptown’s turn to bring it back around. They shut Maine down going in to the half and tied the score up 51 all.
The Sirens came on strong to start the 2nd period as well with several lead jams going their way. It was 63 – 51 for the home team with 25 minutes to play. Five mintues later and Itsy Bitsy Fighter scores a few grand slams bringing the score much closer at 64 – 61 Naptown. For the next five minutes we saw tons of hitting, jams with no lead, slow packs and Naptown’s Ima Hurchu get expelled for an intentional back block. Naptown’s Willa Hoeflinch brought out the double grand slam with less than 10 minutes to go bringing her team back ahead comfortably at 91 – 67. With one minute left to play the score held at 99 – 80 for Naptown. It was bad news for the hometown crowd though with jammer Amooze Booche in the box and Grim D. Mise on the jammer line for Maine. The saving grace was Polly Gone sitting as blocker in the box. Grim racked up a solid and incredible 19 points, which would have tied the game, but Amooze Booche came out of the box and was able to score 4 points before time was up. Once again Naptown was able to pull out the W by 4 points over Maine’s Port Authorities, 103 – 99 (It was 100 – 96 when Naptown won over Maine in June at East Coast Extravaganza).
