What was your first car?
An ’83 Oldsmobile Cutlass that I drove off a cliff. On accident. I broke the steering wheel in half with my forehead.
What do you do for a day job?
Grad student for the time being—I’ll eventually teach at a university somewhere.
What are the names of your pets, and what are they?
Two dogs—Hobbes and Mr. Peterson. Boy and girl, in that order.
Were you a troublemaker as a kid?
Nope. Although I suppose I had my moments.
As an adult?
Yup. Way more fun!
What / who inspires you?
In life, my sister, because she walks the walk. In derby, I could name specific names, but in the chance that I may embarrass my humble derby sisters, I’ll just say anyone who takes it seriously, but has fun with it, loves it unconditionally, and works her ass off to make herself, the teams, and the league as great as possible.
What advice would you give to anyone looking to make it in the real world?
Work hard, but play hard too, however that translates in your life. Always put family and friends above work, money, and anything else material because you may need them to do the same someday.
What is your favorite inspirational quote?
“A lot of people enjoy being dead. But they’re not dead, really. They’re just backing away from life. Reach out. Take a chance. Get hurt even. But play as well as you can. Go team, go! Give me an ‘L’! Give me an ‘I’! Give me a ‘V’! Give me an ‘E’! L-I-V-E LIVE! Otherwise, you’ve got nothing to talk about in the locker room.” —Harold and Maude (1971)
Tailbone protector or padded shorts?
Neither. I am naturally padded.
What would surprise people the most to know about you?
I am writing my dissertation about funeral directors.
