Joan of Dark

Birthday: June 5th
Height: 5’7″
Hometown: Greenfield, Indiana
Position: Blocker, pivot, and if I’m feeling really randy, I jam
Signature move/trademark: If I have one, no one has told me about it.
Injuries: Separated shoulder, I have no idea what I’ve done to my knees since I can’t afford the MRI. But whatever it is, it sucks, and they hurt, My foot, same as above, Two broken fingers

What was your first car?
1990 Chevy Station Wagon. Bright Red. Zero cool factor.

What do you do for a living?
I own Strange Brew Coffee.

What are the names of your pets, and what are they?
Lenore, cat; Hillbilly, cat; Vega, cat; Ernie the Super Puppy, dog; Sassy Burrito, devil disguised as a dog; Starkey, miniature horse; Flippy, llama; Pigwidgeon (Widget) the parrot.

What do you like to do outside of derby?
There is an “outside” of derby? Why didn’t anyone tell me this? In those brief moments between practices and bouts, I do try to find time to knit (have you bought my book yet?), read, work out, and play with horses.

Were you a troublemaker as a kid?
I wasn’t a troublemaker; I just liked to push boundaries. I was the first person in my high school to dye my hair, crazy colors.

What / who inspires you?
All the girls I skate with inspire me.

What is the meaning behind your derby name?
Honestly, I just thought it sounded really, really cool! Plus it’s a pretty kick-ass woman, who may or may not have been a little bit crazy, kicking some serious ass and sticking to her guns.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to make it in the real world?
I have yet to make it in the real world. I don’t like the real world. It makes me uncomfortable.

What is your favorite inspirational quote?
“Only one thing is certain: he cannot be anywhere until he is here. And if he does not manage to find this place, it would be absurd for him to think of looking for another.” — Paul Auster, The Invention of Solitude
(It might not be classic inspirational, but that quote changed my life.)

What is your favorite sports movie?
It’s not a sports movie, but 300 gets me pumped up for a bout. The fight scenes, with the Spartans being rushed … they totally do the most awesome blocker stance ever!

What kind of wheels do you skate on?
Skinny pink G-Rods

Tailbone protector or padded shorts?
I take my chances. So far I’ve only had one tailbone incident! Fingers crossed!

What advice would you give to someone looking to enter the world of derby?
Start working out NOW! Also, clear you calendar for the next couple years. Between practice, bouts, and finding time to hang out with the coolest girls in the world, you’re going to be busy!

What would surprise people the most to know about you?
I’m a dork. There is somewhere, a picture of me in a Star Trek the Next Generation uniform. I read lots of sci-fi, spent most of my youth at conventions, and was convinced it was the best way to meet boys. I think the best way to spend time is curled up on the couch with my knitting and some Dr. Who DVDs.
