She’s graceful, she’s lithe, and she can cut through the pack at lightning speeds! This month’s featured skater is #604, Pirouette Threat. “Piro” joined NRG in 2012 and made her Siren debut this past home season.
1. How are pirouettes threatening?
Well, the leg strength, coordination, and balance it takes to do a pirouette or multiple can be threatening, as well as the fact you can knee people as you pass and if you are doing one. Also, you could kick someone.
2. Why roller derby?
It is hard to explain, but I guess it is a great stress reliever and the skills and camaraderie are always a plus. It helps push me physically and mentally. There is nothing like the calm silence the day after bout day. It’s like being finished with a war.
3. What’s the key to a solid apex jump in your opinion?
I believe it’s the position of yourself and the others on the track and using your lateral and vertical jump in the right direction to make sure you don’t even clip the other players’ hips. The most open apex jumps are the best when they are right on the corner and you jump.
4. Tell the fans something fun or unusual they might not know about you.
I teach second grade at a Catholic school.
